Walther Blachetta and Das Himmelsrad

Recently whilst browsing through The Black Sun Unveiled by James Portillo (2013) I noticed two references to Walter Blachetta, allegedly commenting on the Black Sun symbol:

"More appropriate is the explanation which SS-Leader Walther Blachetta gives in his Buch des deutschen Sinnzeichen where he refers to a 12-spoked wheel as a 'sign of completion...a holy symbol for the SS which is mirrored in the Germanic heavens, in the signs of the Zodiac, as well as in other Aryan order communities. A symbol for higher orders that the SS seeks to re-establish on the Earth."
The citation for the above reference is Ruediger Suenner's Schwarze Sonne. Entfesselung und Missbrauch der Mythen in Nationalsozialismus und rechter Esoterik, 1999. This reference appears on page 647 in Chapter 58 of Portillo's book which is a translation of an article by Hans-Juergen Lange-In the Sign of the Black Sun, originally published in 2002.

Further along in Portillo's book in Chapter 60 on page 700 there is a similar but slightly differently worded translated quotation:

"......a sign of completion, and apparently for the SS a sacred symbol, that is reflected in the Germanic pantheon, in zodiac signs and other Aryan religious societies. A symbol of the higher orders that the SS should restore to the Earth." (Blachetta, 1941)
The above quotation is part of a translated essay by Maik B. Haasler-Die Schwarze Sonne: goettliches Licht der Erkenntnis (The Black Sun: Divine Light of Understanding), also originally published in 2002.

As interesting as these references are they are simply wrong. I have read Blachetta's book in the original German. Either the original essay writers have distorted Blachetta's work or the currently available copy which is published by Orion-Heimreiter-Verlag is a cleansed version of the original. This I must point out is not Portillo's fault as he is only translating previously published works from their original German into English but in my opinion he should have checked Blachetta's original work in German. It may be significant that both Lange's and Haasler's essays were published in the same year-2002. It would appear that a distortion has been accepted at face value and simply repeated by other German occultists.

Nowhere in Blachetta's book is there any reference to a Schwarze Sonne. In 1941 such a concept was not generally known and certainly the idea that the Schwarze Sonne was depicted by the green Wewelsburg sunwheel was not revealed until 1991 and then it was in a work of fiction by a 'Russel McCloud'-Die schwarze Sonn von Tashi Lhunpo. The Black Sun mythos has its origins in the post-war trilogy of esoteric novels by Wilhelm Landig, a member of the occult Vienna Circle:

We must remember that often occult lore and truth is encoded in apparent works of fiction. This is a very powerful device for conveying the esoteric and at the same time concealing it from the profane! One only has to think of the novels of Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton, in particular Vril, the Power of the Coming Race,1871.

As I have already pointed out the Schwarze Sonne was not an openly revealed symbol at the time that Blachetta published his book in 1941 and nowhere does such a symbol appear in his book, not even the migration age sunwheels on which it was based.  However Blachetta does feature a 12 spoked sunwheel on page 80, called Das Himmelsrad (the wheel of heaven):

"Das Himmelsrad ist das Zeichen-der Vollendung und des Zieles-. 'Zwoelf, das ist das Ziel der Zeit, Mensch bedenk die Ewigkeit' heisst es in dem bekannten Nachtwaechterlied. Die Zahl 12 finden wir ueberhaupt stark fuer die Dinge des Ziels und der Vollendung belegt. Nach der Edda haben die zwoelf Asen von goettlicher Artung zwoelf Wohnungen und zwoelf Hengste. Zwoelf Stroeme entspringen aus dem Brunnen Hwergelmir in Niflheim. Und in den 'Zwoelften' ruht zur Wintersonnenwende die Sonne im Ur, im Ort der Sammlung und Besinnung."
Here Blachetta is referring to the significance of the number 12 and how the Himmelsrad is a sign of completion. He regards it as the goal, the destination, the aim of time. With the number 12 there is completion. The zodiac of course is divided into 12 houses. He refers to the primary 12 Aesir and their 12 halls and horses. The fountain Hvergelmir produces 12 rivers. Of course the winter solstice occurs in the 12th month and rests after the 12 nights of Yule when Woden's Wild Hunt rages through the heavens. Nowhere however does Blachetta refer to the SS or Aryan religious orders or societies. The danger of repeating a fiction is that with its very repetition it becomes a fact in the minds of the gullible and the lazy.

Woden, Loki, Lugh and Lucifer-Left-Hand Path Gods

Wodenism is a left hand path religion.  To quote from Dr Stephen Edred Flowers:

"In the ancient Germanic tradition, Odin is both the lord of light and the prince of darkness. He is the god of the elite nobles, and thus the god of royalty and rulership. He is the father of magic and the power to create and destroy. He is the god of poetry: the god of the art of effective linguistic formulations and codifications of knowledge. Both his magical power and his 'gnostic' formulas are embodied in the runes ('mysteries). Finally, he is lord of the dead, and rules over the phenomena of death, thus showing his mastery over all transformational processes. It might also be noted that the Celtic Lugh/Lleu shares almost all of these characteristics with his Germanic counterpart." (Lords of the Left-Hand Path).

Woden is clearly by His very characteristics a left-hand path God. Let us familiarise ourselves with what is intended by the term left-hand path. It is a spiritual pathway which has as its ultimate aim Self-deification. This is the opposite of the right-hand path which seeks unification with the divine and annihilation of the individual ego, to become absorbed into a greater whole. The left-hand path is thus individualistic and involves initiation and higher magic. It is this set of criteria which we should use in order to examine if a particular spiritual path is of the left or the right-hand path. The follower of the left-hand path is antimonian in nature. He does not seek praise and makes himself immune to criticism. He cares not for the opinions of the herd. He is the ultimate loner, the Lone Wolf as we would say in Wodenism. However he can and does seek when necessary the communion of like-minded souls as the magical force of a group is always stronger than the individual and there can be security within the pack. The Lone Wolf is not afraid to venture alone. Society generally sees the Lone Wolf as a threat to its cohesion and security for the Lone Wolf is an unknown factor who strikes without warning. 

The ultimate example of an antinomian character in Germanic mythology is of course Loki and I have explored His character in previous articles: In my opinion Loki is the shadow, the blood brother of Woden. Loki is as much an Aesir deity as Woden if you care to explore His ancestry, except his deity comes via His maternal rather than His paternal side. He is the perfect opposite and the perfect companion for Woden.  Some object and say that there is no evidence for any historical worship of Loki but as I have already pointed out if He is the Shadow of Woden then this is irelevant. Also as the supreme antinomian God He cares not for worship or even acceptance!

Etmologically there is no direct connection between the Celtic Lugus (Gallic)/Lugh (Irish)/Lleu (Welsh) and Woden. The Proto-Celtic root *lug may be derived from the Proto-Indo-European *leuk, meaning to shine. The comparison between Woden and Lugh is more to do with their roles in their respective pantheons. What the two Gods have in common are the following characteristics:

God of nobles.
Father of magic.
God of poetry.
Lord of the dead.
War leaders.
Have a magical spear.
Connected with ravens.
Sired heroes.
Use a single-eye magical technique.

Both Woden and Lugh have giant ancestry (Fomorian in the case of Lugh). Both Gods assumed supremacy over the other Gods from a much earlier one-handed deity: Tyr/Tiw of the Teutons and Nuada/Nudd of the Celts. Both Gods were killed by a spear although in Woden's case this was only a shamanic death not a literal one. Whilst there is, as I have stated, no direct etymological link between Woden and Lugh nevertheless there is such a link between Loki and Lugh.

"The name Loki, like that of the Latin Vulcanus, denotes the light or blaze of fire, and in such phrases as Locke dricker vand, Loki drinks water, described the phenomena of the sun drinking when its light streams in shafts from the cloud rifts to the earth or the waters beneath. The word thus carries us to the old verb liuhan, the Latin lucere, to shine, and to Logi as its earlier form, the modern German lohe, glow; but as the Greek tradition referred the name Oidipous......., to know and to swell, so a supposed connexion with the verb lukan, to shut or lock, substituted the name Loki for Logi, and modified his character accordingly." (The Mythology of the Aryan Nations, Volume II, George William Cox)

There is a further etymological connection between Loki, Lugh and Lucifer which as I have maintained before is not a semitic name but derived from the Latin lucis, the genetive of lux, meaning bringer of light. In the twisted mythology of judeo-xtianity He became associated with a separate dark entity known as Satan who is really the Jehovah of the Hebrews. Let us not forget that xiatinity made devils of most of our deities! Lucifer is NOT Satan! Here then is my simplified equation: Woden=Lugh=Loki=Lucifer. This an oversimplification but clearly there is a connection on various levels between these deities and certainly a strong etymological link between the latter three via the PIE *leuk.

Attached to this article is a picture of the Loki Stone now housed in Kirkby Stephen church in the old traditional English county of Westmorland, one of the few depictions that we have of this God.

Towards a More Archaic Understanding of Woden

If it were not for the Icelandic Eddas and saga source material we would know very little about our own Saxon pre-xtian religion. This is partly due to the oral nature of Germanic society. By the time that the Elder and Younger Eddas were written Iceland had become a xtianised society, albeit long after the Anglo-Saxons who were one of the first to succumb to xtianity. This is not intended to be a criticism, merely a statement of fact. Their Saxon cousins in Germania held out much longer until after the wars with Karl the Butcher in the 9th century. The interesting thing about Iceland is that they agreed by voting at the All Thing to publicly accept xtianity. Germanic heathenism was still permitted privately until the famous witch hunts began several hundreds of years later.

This action by the Icelandic All Thing may be viewed by some as a cowardly act but the Icelanders were and are a pragmatic people and they knew that if they resisted they would be invaded by the Norwegian king and their independence as a sovereign people would be at an end and heathenism would be thoroughly eradicated. The myths of our Gods were still valued enough for them to be commited to writing. If this had not have happened it is questionable that we would have enjoyed such a heathen reawakening in the late 20th century.

The widespread literacy that xtianity brought has proven to be a double-edged sword. It has caused our mythology to survive but in its wake has become a very effective tool by state governments to social engineer society according to their own New World Order agenda. The propaganda which began with newspaper media has now began to flourish with television and its selective reporting of world events and the bias that it places upon its reporting and analysis under pressure from the NWO media moguls that pay their salaries. As an aside I balance my news intake by watching RT (Russia Today) which is a healthy antidote to the venom of western media outlets. However all news media by its very nature is subject to bias and we must bear this in mind.

Returning to the main topic of this discussion: the portrayal of our Gods and myths in the Icelandic sources. The problem with the Eddas is that they were composed fairly late: the 13th century, over 200 hundred years since the Icelandic conversion. We have to ask ourselves how well does a 13th century Scandinavian Odin represent the Woden of the pre-xtian Saxon peoples? This is a difficult question to answer and we may never have the answer. Whilst I am grateful for the Eddas we must look elsewhere to gain a fuller and more accurate understanding of our Gods. Germanic folklore, etymology, place name study, archaeology and historical records and literature can help us to a certain point but we must look to the mythologies of the closely related Celtic, Baltic and Slavic peoples which is the primary concern of my

To get a closer understanding of our primary deity Woden we would profit from a study of the Horned God archetype which in England is represented by Herne the Hunter. An excellent work on this subject is that by Eric L. Fitch,  In Search of Herne the Hunter (1994, Capall Bann Publishing).  He speculates that vestiges of belief in Herne survived right up to the coming of the Saxons and merged with facets of belief surrounding Woden. The Saxons were accustomed both in Germania and in England to a forest environment. Woden is such a deity and His English name tells us this whilst His Scandinavian Odin persona appears to have lost this attribute. We must remember that the cult of Woden originated amongst the Saxons and spread north to Scandianvia with varying success. Thor and Frey still hed sway as the primary deities in different parts of Scandinavia. He is specifically OUR deity. I say this as a part Englishman with Lower Saxon ancestry. He is the God who in particular belongs to the Saxons of England, Germany and the Netherlands. Therefore it is in these lands that we must search for a more archaic understanding of Him.

Woden's name is to be found in more places in the Saxon colonised areas of England than any other Germanic deity. Many of His attributes are similar to those of Thunor's:

"Woden was essentially a storm god manifesting himself in thunderous movement in the heavens." (Fitch)

It is interesting that in Jung's famous dream which was a premonition of his mother's death Wotan appeared as the collector of his mother's soul:
"The night before her death I had a frightening dream. I was in a dense, gloomy forest: fantastic, gigantic boulders lay about among huge jungle-like trees. It was a heroic, primeval landscape. Suddenly I heard a piercing whistle that seemed to resound through the whole universe. My knees shook. Then there were crashings in the underbrush, and a gigantic wolfhound with a fearful, gaping maw burst forth. At the sight of it, the blood froze in my veins. It tore past me, and I suddenly knew: the Wild Huntsman had commanded it to carry away a human soul. I awoke in deadly terror, and the next morning I received news of my mother`s passing.
"Seldom has a dream so shaken me, for upon superficial consideration it seemed to say that the devil had fetched her. But to be accurate the dream said that it was the Wild Huntsman, the `Gruenhuetl`, or Wearer of the Green Hat, who hunted with his wolves that night-it was the season of  Foehn storms in January. It was Wotan, the god of my Alemannic forefathers, who had gathered my mother to her ancestors-negatively to the `wild horde`, but positively to the `saelig Luet`, the blessed folk. It was the Christian missionaries who made Wotan into a devil. In himself he is an important god-a Mercury or Hermes, as the Romans correctly realised, a nature spirit who returned to life again in the Merlin of the Grail legend and became, as the spiritus Mercurialis, the sought after aracanum of the alchemists. Thus the dream says that the soul of my mother was taken into that greater territory of the self which lies beyond the segment of Christian morality, taken into that wholeness of nature and spirit in which conflicts and contradictions are resolved." (Memories, Dreams, Reflections, 1963, page 345)

This was a very personal encounter that Jung had with Wotan and the reader will notice that this Wotan bears a stronger resemblance to the Saxon Woden than to the Scandinavian Odin. He is pictured by Jung as being a forest deity and it is the forest which is the natural habitat of Saxon man.

Nietzsche seems to have had a similar experience of Wotan although he never names this deity but it is obvious who he is referring to:

To the Unknown God

I shall and will know thee, Unknown One,
Who searchest out the depths of my soul,
And blowest through my life like a storm,
Ungraspable, and yet my kinsman!
I shall and will know thee, and serve thee.

 The Mistral Song

Mistral wind, chaser of clouds,
Killer of gloom, sweeper of the skies,
Raging storm-wind, how I love thee!
Are we both not the first-fruits
Of the same womb, forever predestined
To the same fate?

And from Thus Spake Zarathustra we have:-

Ariadne`s Lament

Stretched out, shuddering,
Like a half-dead thing whose feet are warmed,
Shaken by unknown fevers,
Shivering with piercing icy frost arrows,
Hunted by thee, O thought,
Unutterable! Veiled! horrible one!
Thou huntsman behind the clouds.
Struck down by thy lightning bolt,
Thou mocking eye that stares at me from the dark!
Thus I lie,
Writhing, twisting, tormented
With all eternal tortures,
By thee, cruel huntsman,
Thou unknown-God!
"Raging storm-wind", "cruel huntsman": are these not aspects of Woden? One way to experience Woden is to camp out alone in a solitary forest on a stormy night. This will bring you closer to an understanding of Woden than any mere words can portray. The reader will notice again from Ariadne's Lament the reference to the huntsman's lightning bolt, again a attrribute of Thunor. These two Gods seem to merge in so many ways which is not obvious from the Icelandic sources.

"The primitive west Europeans had called the god Wodenaz. This later developed into Wuotan (Old High German) and Wodan (Old Saxon). It is generally believed that he was first thought of as a sky deity-perhaps a wind or storm god-with great wisdom, and with some sort of powers over life and death. This may be evidenced by the derivation of Wodenaz from an Indo-European word, parent also of the Sanskrit vata and the Latin ventus, both meaning 'wind'. He could be compared to the Hindu Lord of the Wind, Vata, and the German storm giant Wode." (Buckland's Book of Saxon Witchcraft, Raymond Buckland, originally published in 1974)
At this point I would direct my readers to my analysis and comparison of Woden with Vata on

It is likely that Buckland obtained his comparison of Woden with Wode and Vatu from Brian Branston's The Lost Gods of England (1957) which he lists in his Bibliography as Branston states:

"We may examine the two sides of Woden's character in turn, and first that suggested by those who derive the name Wodenaz from an Indo-European word which is also the parent of Sanskrit vata and Latin ventus meaning 'wind'. Wodenaz would then be a god of wind and storm like the Hindu Vata, Lord of the Wind. In his turn, Woden is taken to be a deified development of the German storm giant Wode leading his 'wild army' (das wuetende Heer), his procession of the homeless dead across the sky. This view is supported by Adam of Bremen's definition 'Wodan, that is to say Fury' (Wodan, id est furor), and by the Anglo-Saxon wodendream which is glossed into Latin as furor animi, and also by the fact that in Sweden das wuetende Heer is known as 'Oden's jagt' or 'Woden's Hunt'.
Gudmund Schuettestates in his Our Forefathers the Gothonic Nations Volume 1 that the storm giant Wode developed into Woden or Odin:

 "The German Wode=O.N. Odr is a storm giant, the Wild Huntsman and Leader of the Host of the Dead who is finally exalted to the chief god under the name of Woden, Odin."
 In German and English folklore and songs Wod was just a shortened version of Woden as in the Lincolnshire spell:
 "Thrice I smites with Holy Crock, With this mell (hammer) I thrice do knock, One for God, and one for Wod, And one for Lok."

Buckland's book is a curious oddity for its' author was the founder of Seax Wica, Saxon witchcraft in the USA. In the early 1970s Odinism as a revived religion was only just getting started so it is remarkable that someone who was originally initiated into Gardnerian witchcraft should have the idea of cleansing Wicca of its non-Germanic elements and referring to its' primary male and female deities as Woden and Freya. One must remember that Wicca is an Old English word meaning 'witchcraft' and should be pronounced witchuh. Wicca is cosmpolitan and universalist in nature but certain brave individuals have attempted in their own ways to restore its Germanic nature.

 Edred Thorsson published Witchdom of the True. A Study of the Vana-Troth and the Practice of Seidr in 1999. Thorsson's book is a remarkable analysis of what should be referred to as the Vana Troth, a separate pathway in Germanic heathenism that honours the Vanir and their magical practices. Whilst Thorsson refers to Frey and Freyja as the Lord and Lady Buckland substitutes Woden for Frey. Seax Wica in my opinion should be viewed as a possible recruiting ground for suitable individuals to cross the bridge into Wodenism as the primary deity, Woden is the same. Reproduction of Otto Gahr Thor's Hammer

It is not often that I publish reviews of products on this blog but the following item will be of interest to all those Germanic heathens with an interest in the Third Reich.

I have recently added to my links section a very worthy website that deals with the sale of  völkisch merchandise; jewellery, books, CDs, DVDs, clothing, etc designed to appeal no doubt to the majority of my readers so they are deserving of support.

From Weltnetzladen I purchased and received in just a few days a stainless steel reproduction of what is obviously an Otto Gahr Thor's Hammer for a very reasonable price and the delivery is suprisingly quick. Unfortunately I appear to have purchased the last or only copy of this hammer in this metal. However bronze and silver versions are available on the site. describe this Hammer as 

"DESCRIPTION: This is the Gahr version of the Hammer of the Nordic God, Thor. They considered it a Werkverzeichnis NR 16 and they first introduced it in 1934 and they listed it as available in silver. All of this information is available in the book Otto und Karolina Gahr, Die Silberschmiede der NSDAP und der page 74. However, this is only one of the Thor hammers produced by Gahr. The hammer harks back to the early Germanic times and was resurrected as an Aryan symbol by the Deutsches -Ahnenerbe-Stiftung. The heritage foundation caused many ancient Germanic jewelry pieces to be re-created to instill a sense of Pagan pride in the members, but also to give academic interest in the Nordic past to all Germans. This item is in extremely fine Gahr detail with a wide passage hole to receive a chain or thong. It measures about 1 ½ inches tall and is an important relic."

The fact that this version is a Gahr design in my opinion adds to the sanctity of the Hammer. It also incorporates traditional elements to be found on other historic Hammers.On the back of the Hammer there is a maker's mark that at first appeared to be "V1" but now I am of the opinion may be a mediaeval German/Dutch Rune-Ul:

Phoenetic value-ue

Exoteric interpretation of name-Empowerment, healing.
Esoteric interpretation of name-Sacred to the Frisian god Waldh, similar to Ullr the Norse god of wintertime, skiing and archery. The solistical element of Ul makes this rune a rune of turning points. It can be used to turn around a situation to the advantage of the individual.
