Radulphus Vicecomes, Sheriff presumably of Wiltshire was granted land at Newbold by the monks of Malmesbury shortly after the Norman Conquest.

Anselme

Joan (only child and heir of Anselme and held as a Ward at Malmesbury Abbey married Elias Comyn who became the founder of the Comyns of Newbold Comyn) in about 1160 CE. The Comyns in Britain are descended from Robert de Comines, a native of Comines in Flanders who was a companion of William the Conqueror and was very briefly made Earl of Northumbeland. The Comyns are said to be descended from Charlemagne. Comyns of Newbold are a minor branch of a family that became very powerful in Scotland but their male line disappeared. The Comyns arms were subsequently adopted by the Aughtons of Aughton. After Nicholas Aughton all my ancestors were younger sons/daughter who subsequently intermarried with and moved one step down the social scale from minor gentry to the yeomany who form the bulk of my paternal grandmother's ancestors.
